I searched for previous responses to the internet question but didn’t see anything more recent than 2023. So, asking again to see what is new to know. We’re looking to work remotely in northern midwest (WI, UPof MI, MN) and wondering what the best option is for internet connection. Prefer not to support Starlink. We need to be able to access our companies’ VPN networks and occasional video calls. There will be two of us working. There are lots of trees… what’s is our best option? Is it doable?
Starlink is your best option. Even my daughter, who is full time solo and suffers from TDS, too, uses Starlink.
I’m just using my Visible cell phone as a hotspot, and so far I’ve been very happy with it.
I like to camp in the shade, and starlink don’t work there.
When they say someone suffers from TDS it just means they describe a decent human being, a rare thing in America these days. I also would not support starlink. Hopefully, changes are ahead and this monopoly gets broken up but this will need 4 more years.
Cell coverage is excellent in many places now, especially with a good booster, but have to consider depriotization, for this reason I do not recommend verizon network, their deprioritization is heavy in some areas of the West but the West suffers from gross over tourism and scorge of transplants, which causes this issue (got to see if they deprioritize in the Northern Midwest, I used Verizon network in remote areas of Southern Midwest with no issues). Visible is on verizon network, I believe. There are also traditional satellite service providers.
Also, you are supposedly able to avoid deprioritization alltogether or minimize it buy either buying a top notch plan or a business type of plan which offers fixed big amount of data at high speeds, thats what they say but whether its true I’m not sure, as they usually simply deny all serious deprioritization. Its just with regular plans deprioritization in rural areas had been much worse on verizon network than on att network in my experience as I used to have both in parallel
I’m wondering about this, as well. I have been researching camper vans & van life for the past couple of months. I watched a video on a particular van build & they used something other than starlink. I should have written it down!
Most cell phones have the option to use them as a hotspot, or tether them via USB.
I use my Visible unlimited for this.
One guy I know has a free government lifeline phone that he uses as a hotspot for his laptop, and makes $100k+ a year with it.
Phone Wifi Hotspot + $100 buys you enough Terabytes to store a massive media collection that you can fill up using a VPN, Qbittorrent and Bit Che.
Don’t support Starlink owned by an anti-democratic Oligarch! If you really need better than a Wifi Hotspot, pay for only the time you need it. " While Starlink is a prominent satellite internet provider, alternatives include established satellite internet services like Viasat and HughesNet, as well as newer entrants like OneWeb and Amazon’s Project Kuiper"

So you proceed to push fascist right wing propaganda and a whole long Fox News brain lecture immediately after saying “Can we please leave the looney tune left wing propaganda…”
I kept it short to the point, and not pushing ideology like you. People can form there own opinions. Don’t be a hypocrite, ok TFG fulltimer.
Let’s both delete our comments, I just deleted mine, but I would love to carry on this conversation in private, but this isn’t the place for any of it, including calling Musk an anti-democratic oligarth.
I seek only the truth, and to support valid solutions, of which Starlink is one of them.
I use a cell phone as a hotspot with a Weboost drive reach outland. The booster really helps. I actually set up a linear actuator to raise/lower the antenna.
