Transit dropside weights

Hi,
Trying to get conflicting information clarified.
We have a Ford Transit flatbed with a gross weight rating of 3500 and a single wheel rear axle in the company and it has, as the numbers suggest, a gross weight limit of 3500kg including payload and passengers.
An Internet search suggests that a double wheel version of a flatbed Transit would have a greater payload capability, i.e. could carry more weight.
My questions are please, How can a vehicle increase its gross weight capacity by having a larger, heavier axle?
Does the actual presence of a double wheel axle automatically increase the 3500 maximum to something greater?
The double axle has to be fitted to a different Transit in the first place?
Bit confused, any guidance greatly appreciated
Thank you.

Greetings & Welcome!

Both axel’s & tires have weight ratings. Adding dualies can lower the weight on each tire.

The van must also be modified though, with wider wheel wells to accomodate the dualies.

There are pro’s & con’s to both singles & dualies. My personal preference would be singles with an extremely light weight foamie build.

Cheers!
