Seeking custom made high roof top

Hey everyone,

My next task is to find out if anyone knows where I can extend the roof of my 2000 GMC Safari small cargo van. I would like to place my bed in a loft to create more room for living space, and I would also like to be able to stand up in my van.

Thanks,
Shels

Before you do this, please consider the cons… No more drive throughs, or parking garages.

For a high top, I would DIY it. Using the Poor Man’s Fiberglass method, which makes foam board extremely strong, yet light weight.

Another option is a pop up top. You should be able to find one in a wrecking yard off from a VW Eurovan, that should fit with just minimal adjustments to the front and rear roof curvatures. Possibly just adding extra weather stripping to make it work.

I did look at the pop up tent options, but I am concerned about the wind storms. We are having one now in Tacoma. Are there pop up tents for all kinds of weather?

I’ve had a number of older VW campers with pop-tops with canvas sides, and don’t remember weather ever being an issue for me…

She just needs a little bit more roof. I am 4"11’ and i can’t stand up in my van. My van is with the black nose.

The higher roof on that is deceiving, because the floor is also higher.

Just worth mentioning, when I have a low top van, I use a chair on wheels inside, and just do everything while seated. This can solve the crawling around on your knees problem until you can accomplish something better.

Maybe you are correct. I will see how i live what i have and go from there. It’s just that my queen size foam bed is the same size as the back of my van. I will be cutting my foam mattress once i get to that point of the build.

Do you have a couple of feet to spare length wise?

Basically you have two choices… A length wise futon style sofa/bed, or a VW westfalia style rock & roll bed. The rock & roll style can still be full width if that’s what you desire.

Either way you could still have the full bed, and fold up tables to act as a kitchen counter & table top.

You can do an amazing amount of things in such a small space if you get creative.

I looked up " VW Westfalia style rock & roll bed" that is interesting set up. I will have to find a DIY how to do it myself guild.

I always liked those westfalia layouts myself.

They do look pretty neat. I have to design it where I can put my podcast studio into it and two cat. That is another reason for the pop-up top or a high roof idea.

What are the requirements for a podcast studio?

I have a laptop and two monitors. 4 mics a mixing board, and I do have a power source (solar panel). I do have sound proofing to put into the walls if I need too.

The 4 microphones are when people want to record in my van. However, I will be use on mic all the time.
