Looking for recommendations

Hi all… First campervan conversion here !!! i am looking for an oven/stove to complete our camper conversion. I have purchased all the rest from a company called Shield Autocare who have supplied me with the camper windows, a fridge, the 4 way stretch carpet and adhesive, all my roof vents and the MDF template cut out all for a very good price ! however they do not sell the hobs as yet :frowning: - please would someone advise me which is the best company for this ?

Do not use Dometic, I am having problems with their product and their support is absolutely the worst.
I will never buy anything made by them again
May be try Furrion, they are now owned by Lippert

Greetings & Welcome!

For what it’s worth, I’d just go with a portable camp stove. That way you can use it either inside or outside without duplication.

Cheers!

I wanted to say that but the OP seems to want stove/oven combination and might be wanting electric. There are some portable propane based combos sold online but they are not for indoor use.
Another thing to consider is insurance.
I have one 2 burner basic camp stove that seems to be perfect for indoor setup too, but it carries a warning of not being ok installed indoors. If a fire were to happen or if insurance adjuster found that stove setup inside, after an accident, it would be used to deny claims.
Once I had a major flare up in a faulty portable camp stove, 2 feet high flames, wouldnt want this to happen inside a vehicle, some of these arent built to high standards.

We use a two burner cooker that runs on methyl hydrate. Borrow it from the boat. More $$ than a Coleman propane cooker. There are stove top units that work as ovens. We use a cheap BBQ for outside use. Not having a normal oven, makes room for a lot of pots and pans.
Not having a propane tank makes room for the tool box. But a propane tank could always be installed to the outside of the van. I am not a fan of propane. Every year there are burned sites on the highway, of a camper van. My guess is the fridge was running on propane while they were driving.

There are plenty, likely more electrical fires in RVs than propane related. For this reason I would not want to deal with a lot of solar and electrical fridges in a vehicle

Modern propane RV fridges switch from propane to 12v automatically once vehicle is starts.
I never even need to run my propane fridge other than when I’m parked at night, they cool extremely well.
If I had electric fridge I would not be able to do long remote stays like I do or park in shaded woods or overcast climates, I camp for 3 weeks without driving to resupply, it would require too much solar power and I would also be risking burning my rig down from all the extra diy electrical running more amps.

In the furure, as I plan to live off grid, propane fridge would be much preferred over electrical as well.

True downside of RV propane fridge is needing to level it to under 3 and 6 degrees but it doesnt apply to other propane appliances .

My oven, I store stuff in it, actually not that much loss of room

Some people allow rust to damage things and neglect maintenance, once in a while propane appliances should be inspected and serviced/burners cleaned, and should not be allowed to rust, for safety reasons. Most of this one can do themselves. Generally older propane tanks and regulators should be looked at by a pro once in 11 years usually. I would not recommend anyone to DIY permanent propane installations in a vehicle.

Agreed, and sorry for the delay. This site navigation is foreign to me.
My dislike of propane is mostly for sail boats where there is no exit for any leaked gas. I use propane as a back up at my house, and we use it in our camper van. I have not been near a modern propane fridge, just the old ones. The pilot light blowing out, and leaking gas has happened. Newer units probably have a safety switch for this.
The wiring was not an issue for me, and the van needed a lot of new wyring. Everything in the camping area, and most everything up front.

Just never use camp stove inside.
I had another of my outside camp stoves bite the dust turning into a giant flame torch first, if it happened inside Id be done, probably
They are not built to indoor safety standards, also they are high pressure devices and indoors only low pressure devices can be safely used.

That’s why I never use pressurized fuel. That’s a pressurized fuel issue. Nothing wrong with cooking inside. For many years propane was banned on boats for safety reasons, but eventually big money prevailed and the ban on propane was lifted. By rights it should have been banned in vehicles too.

Safety is very important, and better options than propane or butane are available. I chose kerosene for many years, but have now switched to cooking oil, mainly for the convenience of being able to buy it at any grocery store. Kerosene was once available everywhere as well, but it’s much harder to find in cities now.
