Hello all. Theodore here. I just came across the idea of living in a van (other than the Chris Farley way) and it really intrigues me. I have been watching a lot of videos on You Tube trying to figure out how to get started. As I look over the newbies corner I see I’m not the only one so maybe I’ll just lurk around and see what I see!
Hey Theo, I had the same spark about a year ago—started with a few YouTube videos, and before I knew it, I was sketching floor plans and pricing out insulation. It can feel overwhelming at first, but the vanlife community is full of shared tips and trial-by-error stories that really help. I started by focusing on basics: a solid van body, reliable engine, and space that fits your lifestyle. Even if you’re still dreaming, browsing platforms like https://www.truck1.eu/agricultural-machinery/farm-tractors/john-deere-8410-a3538410.html is useful. It’s geared toward commercial vehicles, but you’d be surprised how seeing layout options—even in things like agricultural machines—can spark ideas. For example, the design logic in a John Deere 8410 might not seem relevant, but those machines are built for self-sufficiency and durability, just like a good van setup. Enjoy the process—it’s half the journey.
I’ll throw my 2 cents in for anyone who still sees this post. I started off not knowing anything but I learned as things broke.
I got a 25 foot class B and unless you really know what size you want, I would suggest getting around 25 feet. Not as versatile as a 19 footer but can still got to a lot of places a 30 footer wouldn’t be able to. After my issues with my current 19 footer, I am thinking of going for a 21-22 class B.
I wouldn’t make one to start cuz once you start you might not like it as you thought you would. So get a cheap one that you can make mistakes on and fix cuz there is a lot of hands on learning to do. The best way to learn is to experience I say. lol.
When it comes to spending money, don’t cheap out on the essentials. You need a good water filter. Solar panels are a must in my opinion if you are going to live in it. 600 watts is ideal for someone always on the computer but for a 19 foot van, I have been getting by with 300 watts. Solar panels are never 100% of what is advertised but I use Rich Solar ones and they are consistently 80%. Don’t worry about a generator too much cuz its too loud to use in most places. Buy some good security cameras. And you are going to need fans and reflective sheets for the summer. I bought a lot of stuff I didn’t end up using so buy what you need as you go.
I could talk for days about RVing but those are my tips that come to mind right now. Good luck everyone. Its great when things are working but can be overwhelming when things break so take it one day at a time.
