DIY campers are a big project. You’ll save money not paying a professional but you’ll need to invest a lot of time.
Research is the most important thing you’ll be pouring hours into. Some great websites I highly recommend
- www.explorist.life (slightly more geared to Sprinters)
- www.faroutride.com (slightly more geared to Transit)
- www.parkedinparadise.com (left general for all conversion rigs)
If you don’t like research, troubleshooting or problem solving, it is worth considering investing in professional services for the elements you find most daunting. For example, some hire help for electrical and heaters. Others bring in carpenters (make sure they have experience with campers/rolling homes!)
For some, the project of building out a camper is part of the journey. For others, it’s only a means to an end. Buying a camper or RV and doing renovations is a great middle ground approach.
At the end of the day, there is no one right way to do this. It’s about you: your budget, goals, timeline, comfort, etc. Do you.
