Solar panels on roof of van

Greetings!

What is the amp hour rating on those UPS batteries?

For a while now, I have been purchasing ~100ah slightly used deep cycle batteries from wrecking yards for under $20 each. Mine is usually charged while driving, so no shore power or solar is needed. I do have a generator & a battery charger for a backup plan though.

Cheers!

Greetings!

While the promoters & influencers have successfully popularized things like solar, lifepo4 batteries, and diesel heaters for their own benefit, not ours, let’s take a slightly closer look at reality.

Solar is extremely inefficient, charge controllers die, and batteries die or can be easily depleted beyond usefulness. WHAT THEN??? Do we really want to risk our lives unnecessarily?

Sure, we can have backup equipment, but that takes up extra space. Or we can use more reliable choices from the beginning, and usually for far less money.

People are killing lithium batteries just as quick as lead acid ones, and finding out their warranties are worthless. Charge controllers usually have a very short warranty, and any diesel heater warranties are questionable at best.

I’m sitting in the middle of a blizzard right now, no sun for the last week or more, my low battery protector kicked off my power a couple of hours ago, but my laptop still has power. I have a generator, so I’m not in danger, but more importantly, I can remain comfortable without the need of power. I have heating, cooking, lighting, and more which require no power at all.

I purposely outfitted my rig for living off the grid, and without any power. Don’t get me wrong, I love power, but I treat it as a luxury instead of a necessity, and I suggest others give it some serious consideration as well. People lived comfortably without electricity for thousands of years, and we can too.

Cheers!
